During the summer months the berry farms are in full swing, so enjoy a coffee and a berry-filled ice cream at Julian's Berry Farm or head out to Blueberry Corner to relax and have an ice cream while watching the different breeds of chickens. R n' Bees are on the way out to Tauranga and along with berries they have honey, ice-cream and corn. Or you could have a coffee at the Red Barn or view the crafts in their gift shop.
Ohope Beach is a short drive over the hill, where you can take a refreshing swim, surf, or walk over the ridge to Otarawairere Bay or head further along to the harbour to enjoy some fishing, kayaking, sailing or golf. Also, Ōhope Market is on the first Saturday of every month with a wide variety of stalls that include fresh fruit and veggies, coffee and food.
Dive White Island – take a White Island tour with PeeJays, kayak around Whale Island or do a little bit of fishing from the wharf, rocks or a charter boat. If that's a bit much, you can always try Wally's fish & chips on the wharf or sit down to a meal at the local fishing club.
There are a number of walking tracks in the area to explore. These include the Kohi Point Scenic track over to Ōhope with amazing views out to the islands, and through superb native forest. Or drive out to Kawerau and visit Tarawera Falls and see the crystal clear waters that flow from the falls. If walking isn't for you, then take a drive up to Kohi Point, step out of your car and prepare to be amazed by the view.
If you are into cycling or mountain biking, there are tracks for the casual cyclists along the river or out to Coastlands and mountain bike parks for the adventurous at Onepu Mountain Bike Park or for the more serious give the Motu cycle trails a go. For a more relaxed ride try the Opotiki Dunes trail that is suitable for all ages.
The Awakeri Hot Pools is only a 10-minute drive out of town and is the perfect place to soak those tired muscles after a day filled with activity.
Enjoy a day of shopping at the boutiques down the main street or head out to The Hub. Stop at one of the cafés or bars downtown for refreshment and a meal and sit outside so you can enjoy the sun.
In January, Whakatane has the annual Touch Tournament held over a weekend, always popular, with teams coming from all over the North Island.
The action packed motorcross event, Summercross, occurs over two days in the last weekend of December.
The Art Festival is held over the summer. Watch the sculptors turn a block of rock into an amazing piece of artwork or relax at the rose gardens with Jazz in the Park. Whakatane A&P Show is now back, with horses, farm animals, rides and many rural type competitions.
Toi's Challenge is held in November, an 18km off-road run or walk through the scenic Kohi Point and Mokorua Bird Walk.
Six-hour adventure races take place in the winter and summer in different places around the district. These include Monty's Revenge, the Motu Challenge and the Tarawera Ultra for multi-sport people that enjoy combining mountain biking, kayaking and running.
The White-water Rafting Competition is held out at Kawerau on the Tarawera River and attracts a number of top teams from around the country. Also in Kawerau is the Wood Festival which features local artists and competitors in a number of different wood based events, and the annual dog show is held every year featuring agility and show classes.
